My daughter

My daughter had various medical conditions including Diabetes, Addison’s Disease, Hypothyroidism, Asthmna and more recently HUS/TTP. She was admitted to hospital earlier this year with low platelets and severe bruising to her body. Blood tests found her to have HUS/TTP. She became very unwell and was admitted to the ITU and required dialysis.

Her kidney function deteriorated to the extent she was on longterm dialysis. This proved difficult to manage and she was once again admitted to the Renal Unit. She was tested for MRSA which came back positive in her groin and nasal passage. She had a permcath in situ which was used for her dialysis and plasmapherisis. She had had 4 lines in before the permcath was fitted but all 4 lines became infected. Her immune system was depleted due to her Addison’s Disease therefore fighting any infection became extremely difficult. She slowly deteriorated and contracted sepsis which finally took her from me on 16th October 2008.

I am in no doubt that she had the best of medical care and am extremely grateful to all the staff at the Western Infirmary in Glasgow. I only wish they could have saved her as she was only 23 and had been ill all of her life. I miss her so much and am not sure how I am going to get over her death ( if at all). I understand from the medical team that she was a “unique” case but if there is anyone out there who has experienced similar health problems I would love to hear from them. I am still in the grieving process but intend to do something (don’t know what yet) to try and help others who may have a relative with similar conditions to my daughter.
