Vietnam Vet’s Renal Cell Carcinoma

My husband Ken, a Vietnam Veteran, had a kidney removed 5 years ago due to renal cell carcinoma. It was found accidentally and very early, not because of any symptoms, but due to an ultrasound performed on his gallbladder. We are currently appealing a claim with the Veterans Administration to have his cancer made service-connected because of his exposure to Agent Orange while in Vietnam. It has been denied twice but we aren’t giving up.

It’s difficult to find a doctor who will make the statement that it is as likely as not that Agent Orange exposure caused his cancer. Because there isn’t definite proof, the VA won’t recognize a connection. Yet they do recognize the connection for several other types of cancers, including prostate. It’s very frustrating but we feel blessed that the cancer was found early.
