To quickly access health information from your website's browser, download Dissolving Uric Acid Kidney Stones After a liver transplant I suffered from uric acid kidney stones every few years. Four months ago I had a severe attack in both kidneys. CT scan showed a cluster of stones in one kidney and I was scheduled for surgery three months hence by a urologist Shortly after my nephrologist put me on 100 mg of allopurinol daily and a month later another doctor added sodium bicarbonate because of low blood serum levels of carbonate. For a number of weeks I kept passing stones. When I returned to the hospital for a pre-op meeting with the urologist (surgeon), a fresh CT scan showed that the cluster of stones had disappeared (dissolved?) with only one moderate-sized stone remaining and it was concluded that I no loner needed surgery. It seems to me that the allpurinol and perhaps with the aid of sodium bicorbonate, both of which acted to reduce blood acidity, dissolved the stones and obviated the need for sugery. I intend to remain on allopurinol indefinitely to prevent the formation of stones in the future. Comments
