To quickly access health information from your website's browser, download My First Kidney Stone Last year I spent 2 days in bed with what I thought was a stomach bug. The 3rd day, I woke up with back pain. I thought the pain was from being in bed for 2 days. When I got up, thinking the virus was gone, I was struck with excruciating pain. It was a Saturday morning, so I went to the urgent care. By the time I got there I was throwing up and was pacing the floor. When the physician ask me to give a urine sample, I couldn’t. A few drops of blood was all I could produce. And I couldn’t remember the last time I had gone to the bathroom. I finally got a shot of morphine. The physician told me I had a kidney stone and probably had passed it. My husband asked him if I needed something for pain and he said I wouldn’t need anymore. We went home and as soon as that shot of morphine wore off, I was in severe pain. I called the nephrologist on call (I have high blood pressure and only one functioning kidney) and ask him to meet me in the emergency room. I had 2 liters of fluid and another shot of morphine. Still no urine output. I was sent home at 2 in the morning. The nurse said my labs were fine and my urine was clear. I told them I had not had any urine output in 2 days. They said they would credit that lab and still sent me home. I left the hospital feeling good, so we went by and got a BIG 42 oz drink at the all night curb market and went to bed. The next morning, still no urine output, so I called the nephrologist oncall and he checked my lab results and said come straight to the hospital to be admitted. I was in acute renal failure from a 4.5mm stone stuck in my ureter. And 3 more stones still in the kidney. I had a stent put in and lithostripsy for the 7mm stone. The fragments from the broken stone bottlenecked and obstructed the kidney again! 4 weeks later I finally found relief. I have passed 3 small stones since and have 4 stones in the good kidney and 2 stones in the nonfunctioning kidney! March 2010
