NHL-but I thought it was just a sore knee!

by: LS on Mon, Jul 09 2007

In 2003, I twisted my right knee when tripping over a step. It continued to hurt when I exercised but I just took my Tylenol and went on. Then, in January 2006, after getting up and down from my knees over several hours, my right knee was quite swollen and tender. “Well, I better get this seen, I may need an excuse for work!”
My orthopedist ordered an MRI “Let’s make sure its just a strain” but then he called me that same evening to sat he needed to repeat it, with contrast media, because “it looks like a lymphoma”. Yes, it was. After CT’s, PET’s, bone scans, biopsy and listening to a rather negative surgical onocologist, I met with a wonderfully positive Hemotology/onocologist, and started R-CHOP chemotherapy I had a primary B Cell Lymphoma 6cm large in my distal femur with no apparent involvement anywhere else. It was considered Grade 4, a nasty name in itself. 6 cycles of the poison, 1 month of radiation and every trace of the tumor was gone. A full year of quarterly reevaluations and I’m still clear and I feel great. Each recheck is still scary, until I see my physician’s smile. Each recheck will continue to be scary but all the side effects of chemo and radiation have been worth it. My plan is to belong to the 46% cure rate because I have grandchildren to spoil!
