Blessing in Disguise

Having been recently divorced with a child on the way, I felt I was at the lowest point in my life. Being only 23 I was shocked to be put in this situation. For the next few months I lived with a family member and managed a store while I tried recovering from my past and prepared for a difficult future. In February my son was born, at this time my ex wife and I weren’t getting along and I was unable to see my child.

A few weeks later as I was trying to get visitation rights, I noticed my throat getting tighter. That night as I went to sleep I noticed that I was having difficulty breathing. I went to the doctor the next morning which I was diagnosed with a food allergy. He prescribed some medicine and I went on my way.

I thought to myself, “great, now I have a food allergy.” To my surprise the swelling never decreased when I took the medicine. The swelling gradually increased throughout the week until my throat, face and upper chest were all swollen.

As I went to the doctor again they called an ambulance to take me to the hospital. To my surprise it wasn’t food allergies that was making me swell. It was a tumor that was blocking an artery to heart. A few days later I was diagnosed with lymphoma and under went my first chemotherapy treatment.

It was the lowest point I’ve been through so far in my life. But it ended up being the biggest blessing.

Over the next few months of treatment My ex wife and I began to talk again. And I saw my son for the first time. I finished my chemo treatments in June and my radiation in September and was in remission. And on September 19th my Wife and I were remarried again. It was the most wonderful thing, going from the lowest point in my life to being married again and being a father.

I know that this happened for a reason. It softened our hearts and allowed us to heal from previous damage.

Now I work at a hospital and am going to school to become a Nuclear Medicine Technician. My little boy is 16 months old and is a little daddy’s boy. And I’m still cancer free.
