To quickly access health information from your website's browser, download Colorectal cancer Hi. My name is Debbie. I was diagnosed with State 3 colorectal cancer in 1997 at the age of 47. I had surgery in November of ‘97 followed by 6 mos of chemo I completed treatment in May of ‘98 and felt well enough to dance at my daughter’s wedding in August of ‘98. It took about a year to return to normal (whatever that is). Since then I have been fantastic. Learning that you have cancer is a true life changing experience. You will never look at life the same way again. During the days of chemo I sometimes wondered if it was worth it. I had a lot of trouble with mouth sores and had no appetite. But I can tell you today that it is worth it. Every time I see my precious grandchildren, all born since my cancer treatment, I am so thankful. I have such an appreciation for life that I didn’t have before. I’m always happy to share my story with others. I want to encourage you to fight. I want you to know there can be good days ahead. Just be good to yourself while you’re undergoing treatment. If you don’t feel like having visitors or talking on the phone, don’t do it. People will understand. Ask for help when you need it. That was especially hard for me to do but people who care for you just want to help in any way they can. Many times they just don’t know what to do. Don’t be afraid to ask. I found it helpful to keep a journal. I tried to write every day about something I was thankful for. Some days it was just that the day was over and maybe tomorrow would be better. But I’m living proof that you can beat this thing. Don’t give up. Just take it one day at a time. You have to be proactive. Stay as positive as you can and some days that’s hard to do but you have to try. If you don’t, it will win. Good luck! January 2009
